How to make a particular app the default viewer / editor for its supported file types

I wanted to make VLC the default player for all the file types it supports, because I want my older relatives to be able to double click on a random media file and have it open with a familiar player. (I could also do the same thing for my preferred editor.)
I was able to do this using the terminal, with the somewhat convoluted procedure posted below.
Is there an easier way to do it that doesn't require the user to be a developer?
